Quick answer: Ducted zoning divides your home into areas, such as living and sleeping zones, that you can switch on and off independently. Freeze Please designs and installs zoning for ducted heating and ducted reverse-cycle air conditioning across South East Melbourne, so you only heat or cool the rooms you're using.
How ducted zoning works
Motorised dampers are fitted in the ductwork that feeds each zone. A zone controller opens and closes them, directing air only where it’s needed. More advanced systems add a temperature sensor in each zone, so each area can be held at its own temperature.
Benefits of zoning
- Lower running costs, because you’re not conditioning empty rooms.
- Better comfort in two-storey homes, where upstairs and downstairs behave differently.
- Separate control of living and sleeping areas.
- Quieter operation at night when only bedrooms are running.
Can zoning be added to an existing ducted system?
In most cases, yes. It needs a compatible controller, and the system must handle the reduced airflow when only some zones are open. That’s usually managed with a spill or bypass arrangement or a variable-speed fan. We check your system before quoting.
Planning your zones
- Group rooms that are used at the same time, such as living areas and bedrooms.
- Separate levels in a two-storey home.
- Consider orientation, because west-facing rooms heat up in summer afternoons.
- Avoid creating too many small zones. Most homes work well with two to four.

Frequently asked questions
Does ducted zoning really save money?
Yes. Heating or cooling only the zones you’re using reduces the work the system does, which lowers running costs.
How many zones does my home need?
Most homes work well with two to four zones, usually based on living areas, bedrooms and separate levels.
Can each zone have its own temperature?
With individual zone sensors and a compatible controller, yes. Basic zoning switches zones on and off, but doesn’t set separate temperatures.
