Quick answer: The compressor and condenser are the heart of any air conditioner or refrigeration system. Freeze Please diagnoses and repairs compressor and condenser faults, from failed start components and fan motors to dirty or damaged coils, for residential and commercial systems across South East Melbourne.

What the compressor and condenser do

The compressor pumps refrigerant around the system and raises its pressure and temperature. The condenser, the coil and fan in the outdoor unit, releases that heat outside. If either one fails, the system can’t cool.

Signs of a compressor problem

  • The outdoor unit hums but doesn’t start.
  • The circuit breaker trips when the system starts.
  • The compressor clicks on and off repeatedly.
  • Loud knocking, grinding or rattling from the outdoor unit.
  • The system runs but doesn’t cool or refrigerate.

Signs of a condenser problem

  • The condenser fan isn’t spinning.
  • The coil is blocked with dirt, leaves or grease.
  • The coil fins are bent or flattened.
  • The system shuts down on hot days because of high pressure.
  • The coil is visibly corroded.

Repair or replace the compressor?

Many apparent compressor failures are actually faults in start capacitors, contactors, relays or inverter boards, and these are repairable. When the compressor itself has failed, replacing it is a major job: the refrigerant must be recovered, the compressor replaced, the system cleaned and fitted with a new filter-drier, then evacuated and recharged.

On older domestic air conditioners, replacing the whole system is often better value. On commercial refrigeration, compressor replacement is frequently worthwhile. We’ll explain the cost of each option.

Keeping your condenser healthy

Keep the outdoor unit clear of plants, rubbish and stored items, as required by the manufacturer’s clearances, and have the coil cleaned during regular servicing.

Frequently asked questions

Is it worth replacing an air conditioner compressor?

It depends on the age of the system and the cost of the compressor. On newer or commercial systems it’s often worthwhile. On older domestic systems, a new system is often better value.

Why does my outdoor unit hum but not start?

Often it’s a failed start capacitor or contactor, which is a relatively simple repair. Switch the system off to avoid damaging the compressor, then book a technician.

Why isn't my condenser fan spinning?

Common causes are a failed fan motor, a faulty capacitor or a control fault. Without the fan, the system overheats, so switch it off until it’s repaired.
