Quick answer: If your gas ducted heater won't start, blows cold air, cycles on and off or shows a fault code, Freeze Please can diagnose and repair it. We repair ducted heaters across South East Melbourne and check that the heater is operating safely before we leave.

Common gas ducted heater faults

  • Blowing cold air: the burner isn’t lighting or staying lit. Causes include an ignition or flame-sensing fault, a gas supply problem or a failed sensor.
  • Won’t start or shows a fault code: note the code from the controller before calling, because it helps us diagnose the fault faster.
  • Turning on and off repeatedly: often overheating caused by a blocked return-air filter or restricted airflow, or a controller fault.
  • Noisy operation: worn fan motor bearings, loose panels or burner noise.
  • Weak airflow in some rooms: disconnected or damaged ductwork, or closed zones.

If you smell gas

  1. Turn the heater off and, if it’s safe to do so, turn off the gas at the meter.
  2. Don’t use electrical switches or anything that could cause a spark.
  3. Open doors and windows.
  4. Leave the house and call your gas distributor’s emergency number, which is shown on your gas bill.

Carbon monoxide warning signs

Carbon monoxide is colourless and odourless. Warning signs include headaches, dizziness, nausea or tiredness while the heater is running, soot or staining around the heater, and a lazy yellow flame. If you suspect carbon monoxide, turn the heater off, get everyone into fresh air and seek medical advice. Regular heater servicing and safety checks reduce the risk.

Repair or replace?

Most faults with ignition, sensors, fans and controllers are repairable. Replacement is usually the better option when a heater is 15 to 20 years old and needs a major part, or when the heat exchanger is cracked. A cracked heat exchanger is a safety risk and generally can’t be repaired. See gas ducted heater installation.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my ducted heater blowing cold air?

Usually because the burner isn’t lighting or is shutting down, often due to an ignition or flame-sensing fault, a gas supply issue or overheating. It needs a technician to diagnose.

Why does my ducted heater keep turning off?

Overheating caused by a blocked return-air filter or restricted airflow is a common cause. Check and clean the filter. If it keeps happening, book a repair.

Is it safe to use my heater when it shows a fault code?

Fault codes indicate the heater has detected a problem. Don’t keep resetting it. Leave it off and book an inspection.
